What Is an Early Pregnancy and Dating Scan?

An early pregnancy scan, also known as a dating scan, is a type of ultrasound performed between 6 and 13 weeks of pregnancy. It serves several purposes to ensure both the mother and baby are progressing well during the early stages of pregnancy.

Note that this scan is a basic early dating scan and not the nuchal translucency (NT) scan.

What Is the Aim of the Scan?

Estimates Pregnancy Stage – The scan accurately determines how many weeks pregnant you are and calculates your estimated due date (EDD).

Monitors Baby’s Development – It assesses your baby’s growth, measures their size, and confirms their heartbeat. It also determines the baby’s position within the womb.

Detects Health Conditions – This scan can identify potential chromosomal conditions or other health issues.

Confirms Number of Babies – The scan verifies whether you’re carrying one baby or multiples (twins or more).

When Is the Best Time to Have the Scan?

The ideal time for an early pregnancy scan is between 6 and 13 weeks of pregnancy. This window provides the most accurate measurements and allows for early detection of potential concerns.

What Should You Do Before the Scan?

To prepare for your dating scan:

Drink Water – at least 2 litres per day.
Arrive with a full bladder. This helps push your uterus upwards, allowing the sonographer to get clearer images.
Bring Necessary Documents. Bring any relevant medical records or information from your healthcare provider.
Plan for Support. A support person is welcome to accompany you.

What to Expect During the Scan

When you arrive for your scan, here’s what will happen:

Comfortable Setup – You’ll lie on an examination bed while a trained sonographer applies a small amount of gel to your abdomen to help with the imaging process.

Live Ultrasound Images – A handheld device (transducer) will be used to create detailed images of your baby.

Scan Results – The sonographer will share preliminary findings with you. You will also receive digital photos and videos of your baby. However, video recording of the scan is not permitted for privacy and safety reasons.

Important Things to Know About Early Pregnancy Scan

Accuracy – While dating scans are very accurate in estimating the gestational age, they are not 100% guaranteed to detect all conditions.

Non-Invasive Procedure – The scan is painless and typically takes about 30 minutes.
